4 Types of Motorcycle Accidents You Can Easily Avoid

Motorcyclists face unique dangers on the road. Due to lack of a vehicle body, they are more likely to experience catastrophic injuries or death when involved in a collision. The Missouri Department of Transportation found that 251 motorcyclists died on state roadways between 2013 and 2015. The demographic most likely to experience a fatality are people between the ages of 21 and 25.

It is vital for motorcyclists to remain defensive while driving. That means being aware of the most common accidents and knowing how to respond to them.

1. Car changes lanes directly in front of you

Since motorcycles are much smaller than automobiles, they fit more easily into blind spots. A car may try to merge lanes without realizing you are there. Therefore, it is important to be aware of when you are in a blind spot and spend as little time there as possible.

2. Car bumps into you from behind

A fender bender may not be a big deal between two vehicles, but when one of the drivers is on a motorcycle, it can be deadly. You can avoid cars bumping into you by coming to a stop at the side of the lane rather than in the center. Pay attention to traffic coming in behind you. You will need to react quickly if it seems like a car will not stop in time.

3. Car opens a door in front of you

You may try to circumvent a line of cars by cutting off to the side. Depending on the width of the lane, there may be a little space between traffic and parked cars, but you should avoid doing this at all costs. People trying to get out of their vehicles may not look to see if someone approaches.

4. The road is wet

Rainfall, especially if it has not rained in a while, will make the roads slippery. Make sure to accommodate these conditions by not going too fast. Keep your lights on to help other drivers see you.
