It’s Motorcycle Season: Tips To Keep Yourself Safe On The Road

Prime motorcycling season is finally upon us. As we move into spring and summer, more and more bikers will be hitting the open road.

If you are a motorcyclist, you probably know all too well the challenges of sharing the road with other motorists. Many motorists fail to accommodate motorcyclists on the road. They may cut them off in traffic, turn suddenly in front of them, and fail to see them when changing lanes. All of these factors contribute to the challenges of riding safely.

If you are a motorcyclist, here are some things to keep in mind to keep yourself safe on the roads this season:

  • Practice defensive driving: When riding your motorcycle, prepare for the unexpected. Try to anticipate what surrounding drivers are going to do: Watch their head movements. Prepare to maneuver your bike to avoid getting too close to other vehicles.
  • Avoid riding in bad weather: Driving in rain storms or other inclement weather is a risk. Check the weather report before heading out and if it starts raining heavily – or if visibility is reduced – stop until it’s safe to ride again.
  • Give yourself space: Ride in open zones whenever possible, in gaps between clusters of cars. This will allow you to stay out of vehicles’ blind spots – and enjoy the open road.
  • Vary your speed: When a motorcyclist’s speed remains the same, it’s easy for motorists to miss them. By varying speed – safely, of course – a motorcycle will be more visible to other drivers.
